Who is he? 

Daniel Chan is the Director of Professional Services, Data Protection Officer at Ascent Solutions. His work involves leading multiple teams, including the Project Management Team, Field Services Team, Data Analytics Team, and the Ascent Global Support Centre.

Daniel ensures that Ascent’s products and solutions are delivered to our customers in a holistic and timely manner as part of customer success. Additionally, he also handles data protection and business continuity management within the company.

Can you tell us why or what made you decide to enter the cybersecurity sector?

“I was intrigued by the ever-evolving challenges in the cybersecurity sector, and the opportunity it presents to make a significant impact.

As technology continues to advance, the need for robust cybersecurity solutions grows more crucial.

I wanted to be part of the solution in addressing these challenges and contribute to creating a safer digital environment.”

What is a typical morning at work?

“My mornings usually begin with a cup of coffee, answering emails, and reviewing the previous day’s accomplishments and planning for the day ahead.

This includes checking in with team leads, prioritizing tasks, and addressing any immediate concerns or issues. I often have meetings to discuss ongoing projects, strategic decisions, and operational matters.”

What are some of the challenges of the job?

“Some challenges include staying ahead of evolving cybersecurity threats, managing resources effectively, ensuring compliance with data protection laws, and keeping up with the latest technologies and industry trends.

Additionally, fostering a culture of security awareness among all employees is an ongoing task.”

How do you stay at the forefront of technological advancements and emerging trends in the industry?

“I make it a point to continuously learn and adapt. This includes reading industry reports, attending webinars and conferences, and participating in professional networks.

I occasionally get my hands “dirty” but doing some of the grunt work to feel the pulse on the group.

Additionally, I encourage a culture of learning within my teams, promoting knowledge sharing and the exploration of new ideas.”

Can you share examples of significant technological innovations or breakthroughs that you find particularly exciting or impactful?

“The development of generative AI and machine learning technologies in the cybersecurity field is exciting.

These technologies are enhancing threat detection and response capabilities, allowing us to anticipate and mitigate risks more effectively.

Another promising area is quantum cryptography, which could revolutionize the way we protect sensitive data.”

What are some of the main challenges or obstacles that you perceive in the adoption and implementation of new technologies?

“One of the main challenges is ensuring that the workforce is equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to utilize these technologies effectively.

Other challenges include budget constraints, data privacy concerns, and the need for seamless integration with existing systems.”

Are they specific domains or areas within the technology industry that you consider to have a substantial growth potential, and why?

“The field of IoT has significant growth potential due to the increasing interconnectivity of devices. However, this also introduces new cybersecurity challenges that need to be addressed.

Another area is AI and machine learning, which are becoming increasingly important in many sectors, including cybersecurity.”

How do you foster a culture of innovation within your organisation and what practices do you employ to drive technological advancements?

“I promote a culture of open communication, where every team member feels comfortable sharing ideas. We also have regular brainstorming sessions and encourage continuous learning.

To drive technological advancements, we invest in training and development, stay updated with industry trends, and collaborate with other innovators in the field.”

From your perspective, what role does technology play in advancing sustainability and driving positive change?

Technology plays a vital role in advancing sustainability and driving positive change. It can help streamline processes, reduce waste, and make resource use more efficient.

In the context of cybersecurity, technology is the key in protecting data, ensuring privacy, and fostering trust in digital systems. As we increasingly move towards a data-driven society, maintaining robust cybersecurity measures is not just about protecting individual businesses or consumers, but it is also a part of ensuring the sustainable and responsible use of data.

Moreover, technology can help in monitoring sustainability efforts and measuring their effectiveness. As such, it is an indispensable tool in our journey towards a more sustainable and equitable world.”

What were some of the life lessons which you have learned along the way in your career?

“Some key lessons I’ve learned include the importance of lifelong learning (learning how to learn especially), the value of collaboration and teamwork, and the necessity of adaptability in the face of change. I’ve also learned that leadership involves not just directing, but also supporting and empowering your team.”

This aligns with my passion for knowledge sharing and my belief in the importance of preparing the next generation of leaders and security professionals.”

What advice would you give to individuals seeking to forge a successful career path in the cybersecurity industry?

“Firstly, be prepared for continuous learning – the cybersecurity landscape is constantly evolving, and so must your knowledge. Secondly, develop a strong foundation in IT and computing principles.

Finally, consider gaining certifications such as the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or Certified Information Security Manager (CISM). These can demonstrate your expertise and commitment to the field.”
